Was this school always here? Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos High School might not have the grandest facade. But its story is deeply intertwined with the struggle for social justice and educational equity. Founded in 1972, Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos High School wasn’t always located here on Division Street. It began as “La Escuelita Puertorriqueña” in the basement of a church. The school emerged as a beacon of hope for the Puerto Rican community in Chicago. A 1971 study had revealed a staggering 71.2% high school dropout rate for Puerto Rican youth. Concerned community members took action. Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos High School became a testament to their dedication. The school embraced its namesake, Pedro Albizu Campos. He was a prominent Puerto Rican nationalist leader who fought tirelessly for his people’s rights. Today, Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos High School stands as a symbol of resilience. It’s a place where students not only receive an education but also connect with their heritage. They learn about the legacy of Albizu Campos and other leaders who dared to challenge injustice.
