DR Koncerthuset, part of the DR Byen complex, opened its doors in January 2009 after nearly six years of construction. Inside, it houses four unique halls, each designed with specific acoustic properties to enhance different musical genres. The main auditorium, a warm and inviting space with golden, wavy walls, seats 1,800 people. Despite its size, the hall maintains an intimate atmosphere, with the audience encircling the stage. This unique design, coupled with the expertise of Japanese acoustic specialist Yasuhisa Toyota, earned DR Koncerthuset a spot on Gramophone magazine’s list of the ten greatest concert halls of the new millennium.
The other three studios within DR Koncerthuset each have distinct personalities. Studio 2, a rehearsal room adorned with portraits of musicians, offers a warm and inviting space. Studio 3, inspired by a piano, features a striking black and white design. The intimate Studio 4 is bathed in red, with rotating panels that adjust the acoustics to suit the performance. These variable acoustics, tailored to different ensembles and musical genres, make DR Koncerthuset a versatile venue.
The building is full of intriguing contrasts. Rough, grey concrete walls meet polished steel floors, creating a unique interplay of textures. The spacious foyer, topped by a glass roof, offers a glimpse of the stars. Backstage, vibrant neon orange ceilings and cable ducts create a surprising sense of calm amidst the industrial feel. The chaotic network of pipes and ducts, all painted in the same striking color, becomes a unified design element.
