How does a plaque on Bergheimerstraße in Heidelberg, Germany, connect to the Philippines? This is the Dr. José Rizal Plaque. It commemorates the time the Philippine national hero, Dr. José Rizal, spent here. Dr. Rizal was studying ophthalmology under Dr. Otto Becker. He was already a licensed doctor from Spain but he wanted to further his skills. He aimed to cure his mother’s failing eyesight. The inscription tells us that Rizal worked here at the University Eye Clinic from February to August 1886. While Heidelberg charmed him, his homeland called. He poured his longing into a beautiful poem, “To the Flowers of Heidelberg”. Rizal’s writing went beyond poetry. His novels, including “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo”, exposed the harsh realities of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. Though written far from home, his words resonated. They sparked a desire for change and ultimately led to his execution in 1896. Yet his legacy lived on. Today, Dr. José Rizal is remembered as a hero who dared to dream of a better future for his country. This plaque in Heidelberg stands as a testament to his pursuit of knowledge, his love for his homeland, and his enduring impact on Philippine history.
