“Dedicated to the animals”. That is perhaps the most fitting epitaph for Dr. Frank E. Rutherford Veterinary Hospital. Established in 1924, this hospital stands as one of Texas’s oldest continuously operating veterinary practices.
Dr. Frank E. Rutherford began his practice long before 1924. He started in 1906 as an unlicensed doctor. His practice was known as Dr. Frank E. Rutherford Veterinary Hospital. In 1920, he obtained his non-graduate veterinary license.
Early telephone directories show Dr. Rutherford working as a solo practitioner. He made house calls. He primarily worked on livestock. Soon after getting his license, he established the veterinary hospital. The building was specifically designed as a veterinary hospital. It is still located at 924 S. Haskell Avenue, formerly Forney Avenue.
Dr. Rutherford’s story doesn’t end with his life. After Dr. Rutherford’s death in 1932, his widow, Nell Rutherford, managed the hospital. Her son-in-law, Charles Steeger, attended veterinary school. He later assumed ownership in 1936. Nell Rutherford retained ownership of the building and land.
Dr. Steeger had associates, but he remained the sole owner until the mid-1950s. Dr. James Earl Nash, who was hired in 1945, became a partner. When Nell Rutherford passed away in 1975, Dr. Steeger became the full owner of both the practice and the facility. Shortly after Nell’s death, Dr. Nash passed away, leaving Dr. Steeger as the sole owner again.
In 1969, Dr. Ronald E. Vaughn joined the practice. He became a partner in 1979. In 1985, he purchased the building, land, and practice from Dr. Steeger upon his retirement.
Dr. Vaughn owned the practice until 2013. Dr. Teri Rowan, who joined in 2008, purchased it. Having fallen in love with the hospital’s rich history, Dr. Rowan is committed to carrying on Dr. Frank E. Rutherford’s legacy.
The facility’s original facade has been carefully preserved. Despite the expense, efforts were made to avoid demolishing the old building. This was done because of its historic significance to Dallas, Texas, and the veterinary community.
In 1999, the lobby was restored to its original decor. A replica ceiling was installed using a 1930s photograph. It was complemented by matching furniture and fabric. Other areas have been modernized, but all changes have been documented.
In August 1999, Rutherford Veterinary Hospital was recognized as a county and state historical landmark. The hospital adheres to the highest standards of veterinary medicine. It strives to provide exceptional care to every patient. It is the oldest operating animal hospital in Dallas, serving the community since 1924.
Today, the Dr. Frank E. Rutherford Veterinary Hospital continues to serve Dallas. It provides compassionate medical, surgical, and wellness care. They consider each pet a member of their family. This plaque stands as a testament to their enduring commitment. It honors a legacy of caring for animals.
