You might not guess from its unassuming facade, but Downsview Methodist Church in Upper Norwood has seen a lot of history. Now, standing right here in front of it, you are standing on sacred ground.
This church was built in 1928, a time when the neighborhood around it was starting to expand. Many of the original homes were still being built, but the people of the area needed a place to gather, to sing, and to find community in their new lives. Downsview Methodist Church became that place. It wasn’t just a place to worship, but also a center for charitable work and community gatherings. You can imagine children attending Sunday school, families sitting in the pews, and people of all ages coming together for various events. The church helped to build a strong sense of community in a rapidly growing neighborhood.
While Downsview Methodist Church is no longer a community center in the same way, it remains an important part of the Upper Norwood community. They still run a vibrant program. You can drop in on Mondays for a variety of activities. The Downsview Singing Men meet every Monday night, and the Downsview Players – a local amateur dramatic group – rehearse every Tuesday. There is even a Badminton group for those who want to get some exercise and have some fun. Downsview Methodist Church is a place where people can come together to celebrate their faith, to connect with others, and to make a difference in their community.
Now, imagine walking through those heavy wooden doors. What would you see inside? What stories would the old pews and walls tell, about the people who have walked through these halls before you?
