Nestled between Bonn’s bustling center and the elegant Bad Godesberg, lies Dottendorf. This charming quarter, home to around 6,000 residents, whispers tales of a rich past. Dottendorf wasn’t always the vibrant suburb it is today. Its roots lie in a quaint farming and winegrowing village. The name itself, possibly meaning “Dotto’s village,” first appeared in records around 804. Imagine strolling through Dottendorf’s historic core near St. Quirin Church. The preserved half-timbered houses lining the narrow, winding streets transport you back to Dottendorf’s simpler days. The oldest among them, marked by a wayside cross, dates back to 1746. Nearby, Winzerstraße, or “Winegrower Street,” serves as a tangible reminder of the vineyards that once graced the slopes of Venusberg, a hill overlooking Dottendorf. The winemaking tradition thrived here even into the 20th century. Dottendorf officially became part of Bonn in 1904. The area experienced rapid growth after World War II, due to its proximity to the government district. The arrival of government officials in the 1950s spurred the development of the first settlements on Damaschkestraße. Later, employees of prominent institutions like Deutsche Post, Deutsche Welle, and Telekom also chose Dottendorf as their home. Dottendorf also boasts a unique landmark: the Dottendorf Castle. First mentioned in documents in 1491, the castle’s present appearance is largely thanks to Carl Baunscheidt, who remodeled it between 1863 and 1869. The castle’s history stretches back even further, with an earlier structure originating in the 15th century. The castle grounds later became the site of a machine factory and then a hospital. Today, Dottendorf continues to evolve. The former Lancôme company site transformed into BaseCamp Bonn, a unique hostel featuring rooms in vintage train cars and mobile homes. While the expansive site of the former Miesen coachbuilding factory awaits redevelopment, plans are underway for housing, a student dormitory, and a daycare center on the nearby former Lubig bakery site. Dottendorf: a charming blend of history and modern life, nestled on the slopes of Venusberg, waiting to share its stories.
