A tiny patch of wildness. That’s Dorothy W Erskine Park. Perched atop a rocky outcropping it offers breathtaking views of southeastern San Francisco. This small park is a hidden gem nestled among eucalyptus trees.

Dorothy W Erskine Park wasn’t always a park. Privately owned until 1978 the land was part of the Crocker Estate Tract. Difficult terrain kept it undeveloped for decades. Local activism played a huge role. The Sunnyside Neighborhood Association and Glen Park Association pushed for the city’s acquisition. The Open Space Fund approved in 1974 made the purchase possible.

The park’s dedication in February 1979 was a significant event. Dorothy Erskine herself attended along with Mayor Dianne Feinstein. Local realtor Ken Hoegger served as master of ceremonies. The park honors Erskine a prominent Bay Area environmentalist and conservationist. She was instrumental in founding the Greenbelt Alliance and SPUR. She championed livable neighborhoods blending homes shops and parks with good transit access. Protecting open space was a core part of her vision.

Dorothy Erskine Park may be small but it’s significant. It showcases the city’s commitment to preserving open space. It’s a testament to local activism. It’s a quiet tribute to a remarkable woman. Sadly the park lacks benches. So enjoy the view standing amidst the trees. Imagine the tireless efforts that brought this small but important park into being. A place to breathe reflect and appreciate the beauty of San Francisco. Dorothy W Erskine Park is more than just a park it’s a piece of history a symbol of perseverance and a tranquil escape.
