This blue plaque marks the former home of Dorothea Lambert Chambers. A tennis legend, she was born in Ealing in 1878. She was an exceptional player, achieving unprecedented success in the early 20th century. It’s a little hard to imagine, but this is the very house where this dynamic woman lived between 1887 and 1907. Imagine practicing her powerful volleys and graceful slices in this very spot! She won a remarkable seven Wimbledon women’s singles titles! Her victory in 1911 makes history: she won the Wimbledon final against Dora Boothby with a score of 6-0, 6-0. That’s right, a perfect score for a Grand Slam singles final! Even Steffi Graf, a later tennis superstar, only repeated this feat once, in 1988. Dorothea Lambert Chambers was also an Olympic gold medalist, winning the women’s singles event at the 1908 London Olympics. This place saw a great champion rise.
