Do you notice how Dörnichtweg whispers tales of Dresden’s resilience? Dresden is the capital city of Saxony. It sits nestled in a valley on the Elbe River. It is near the Czech border. Dresden is easily reached by rail, car, or air. It is perfectly linked with the international transit network.

Dresden’s history stretches back over a thousand years. The city evolved to become a seat of the Saxon Dukes. They enhanced its reputation as a political and cultural centre. Dresden then became the capital of the most important protestant country. This was in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation.

But let us step back for a moment. Dresden was first mentioned in 1206. The name likely came from “Drežďany”. This means wash or floodplain people.

Now, consider Dresden’s cultural ascent. In 1685, a fire razed Dresden. However, in 1694, Frederick Augustus I, also known as Augustus the Strong, took the throne. He transformed Dresden. The city became “Florence on the Elbe”. Its museums became a role model. Architecture and art flourished. The Dresden painting gallery became famous. The Green Vault became one of Europe’s richest treasure chambers. The Dresden Zwinger was erected. The Dresden Frauenkirche was built. Augustus even started the first occidental porcelain factory in Meißen in 1710. These collections became the richest and most extensive in Europe.

The Industrial Revolution brought more change. Dresden became a major economic centre. New industries sprang up. By the 20th century, Dresden was a tobacco hub. Over 40 cigarette factories churned out 60 percent of Germany’s tobacco. Notably, the Yenidze was Germany’s biggest tobacco factory.

Then came destruction. Dresden experienced its darkest days during World War II. British and US planes bombed Dresden over four days in February 1945. The town centre was severely damaged. Dresden lay buried under debris. But Dresden began to recover in the early Fifties. Historic buildings were slowly restored.

After German reunification in 1990, Dresden became the capital again. Restoration continued. The Frauenkirche was reconsecrated in 2005. Even today, Dresden faces challenges. The Elbe flooded Dresden in August 2002. The flood reached a peak of 9.40 m. Maintenance work continues.

The bombing of Dresden remains a contentious topic. Some describe it as immoral or a war crime. Around 25,000 to 35,000 people died. The city centre and many baroque works of art were destroyed. Reconstruction began in 1951.

Today, Dresden welcomes visitors. Many historical buildings are restored. Reconstruction continues. Dresden faced flooding in summer 2002. Damages are now nearly imperceptible. The re-erected Church of Our Lady was consecrated in 2005.

Now, as we stand on Dörnichtweg, remember Dresden’s story. It is a tale of destruction and reconstruction. It is a testament to the spirit of its people. Dörnichtweg is a thread in Dresden’s rich tapestry.
