Perhaps unexpectedly, the Dornbuschkirche in Bonn owes its name to a burning bush. But this is no ordinary bush. It’s a symbol of divine encounter. Step closer to uncover the story behind this unique name and the church it represents.
The name “Dornbuschkirche” might sound a little strange at first. The church is named after the stained glass window on the west side. The window depicts the burning bush from the Book of Exodus. According to the Bible, God spoke to Moses through this burning bush. In the middle of the desert, the thorn bush became a place where people could experience God.
Karl Dedy designed the window for the community center’s inauguration in 1974. The window was designed to help turn our church into a place where people can experience God. Uda Eulenberg’s seal and Ula Wienke’s logo also feature the thorn bush in different artistic forms.
From the start, the burning bush has been a symbol of our church. In December 2016, the community assembly overwhelmingly approved a working group’s proposal. Shortly after, the presbytery confirmed the vote. Since then, the Evangelical Community Center Bonn-Holzlar has been called “Dornbuschkirche”.
But the Dornbuschkirche is more than just a name and stained glass. The Dornbuschkirche is an active community. The church offers a variety of services and events. These cater to different age groups and interests.
Children’s church services run parallel to Sunday services. Senior citizens can explore the digital world together at the Digital Café. A summer camp in France is planned for 2025. It promises exciting activities and new friendships.
The Evangelische Kirchengemeinde Bonn-Holzlar is looking for a youth leader. They also seek volunteers for the senior citizen visiting service. This service supports seniors in the community.
The Dornbuschkirche is not just a building. It is a community. It is a place of encounter and support. It is a place where faith comes alive. It is a place where everyone is welcome. Remember the story of the burning bush. Consider how it has inspired this community. Let the Dornbuschkirche be a reminder. God can speak to us in unexpected places. God is present even in the most ordinary of things.
