Gazing at the Dorfkirche Wallroda, one can’t help but wonder about its origins. The first documented mention of a church in Wallroda appears in a church directory around the mid-14th century. However, the exact origins and construction date of the original church remain shrouded in mystery. There’s even speculation about the location of the very first church. Some sources suggest it stood on the right bank of the Große Röder river, near Schafberg hill. The problem was, the early houses of Wallroda were on the opposite riverbank. Frequent flooding often prevented villagers from reaching their place of worship. This eventually led to the construction of a new church across the river, on the site where the Dorfkirche Wallroda stands today. This church held a special significance for the community, serving as a pilgrimage site until the Reformation. The Dorfkirche Wallroda boasts some remarkable historical features. Two bronze bells, dating back to 1410 and 1420, resonate with the echoes of centuries past. There’s also a small mass bell from the church’s Catholic era, placed at the beginning of the 16th century, before the Reformation. The current church building itself dates back to the 17th century. The architecture is simple yet elegant. A rectangular layout with a small attached vestibule leads into the main sanctuary. A steep saddle roof crowns the structure, while an octagonal tower houses the bell chamber and clock. Topping the tower is a gilded orb and weather vane. Inside, a wooden winged altar and pulpit command attention. A baptismal font sits before the altar, accompanied by a baptismal ewer from 1895. The ewer bears a touching inscription. Engraved on its base are the names of the Wallroda families who donated this vessel to the church. The church pews, galleries, and ceiling paneling showcase simple yet beautiful woodwork. Between 1865 and 1902, the Dorfkirche Wallroda housed an organ built by the renowned Gottfried Silbermann. This instrument, originally created for the old village church in Etzdorf, found a new home in Wallroda in 1865. Eventually, it was moved to Bremen Cathedral where it resides today, a testament to its enduring legacy. Today, the Dorfkirche Wallroda remains a vital part of the community. Services, weddings, baptisms, and funerals are held within its hallowed walls. The church choir’s rehearsals fill the air with music. On Christmas Eve, the spirit of the season comes alive with a nativity play performed by the village’s children and youth.
