Was Donnybrook, Victoria always called Donnybrook? No. It wasn’t. The suburb we stand in now, Donnybrook, is about 30 km north of Melbourne’s bustling Central Business District. Donnybrook is actually the second location to bear this name. The original Donnybrook, now known as Kalkallo, was situated on what was then called Sydney Road and is now known as the Hume Highway. The current Donnybrook came into being in 1872 with the arrival of the railway line. The train station and the village that sprung up around it took the name Donnybrook from the already established Donnybrook, 3 km to the west. After just two years, in 1874, the original Donnybrook was renamed Kalkallo and its former namesake lived on. The name Donnybrook is widely believed to have been inspired by Donnybrook Parish in County Dublin, Ireland. Today, Donnybrook is a quiet suburb with a train station on the North East line and a small collection of businesses. However, change is afoot as the area undergoes a period of planned development. Donnybrook provides a glimpse of what was once a sleepy rural community on the outskirts of the growing city.
