“A hub for social sciences” they said. That’s what the Donald P. Jacobs Center is meant to be. Right here in Evanston Illinois. This imposing structure. It has a complicated past.
The Donald Jacobs Center’s story begins not with groundbreaking ceremonies. It begins with a relocation. The Kellogg School of Management once called this place home. A grand institution in its own right. But growth demanded a new space. A new global hub. The Kellogg School departed leaving the Jacobs Center mostly empty.
For years the building sat vacant. A testament to the challenges of raising money. Especially for a building that already had a name. It wasn’t just a matter of a fresh coat of paint either. The Jacobs Center’s systems were failing. A full renovation was needed. More than just cosmetic upgrades. This wasn’t simply repainting and moving in.
The plan is ambitious. They will create a sixth floor. A significant overbuild to connect the three separate buildings organically. The renovations aim for a LEED Gold rating. This shows the University’s commitment to sustainability. The completed center will house the Buffett Institute for Global Studies. The Institute for Policy Research will also find a home here. The Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and the Global Engagement Studies Institute are also slated to move in.
