Born in the Palace of São Cristóvão. Dona Maria’s life began in Rio de Janeiro. This is where she first drew breath. A princess’s life began in this vibrant city. She was the eldest daughter of Prince Pedro de Alcântara. He would later become Pedro I of Brazil and Pedro IV of Portugal. Her mother was Archduchess Maria Leopoldina of Austria. Dona Maria’s birth in 1819 was significant. She was the only European monarch born outside Europe. Yet she was born on Portuguese soil. This detail adds an intriguing layer to her story.

Dona Maria became Queen of Portugal at the young age of seven. A succession crisis sparked this unexpected ascension. Her father Pedro IV abdicated the Portuguese throne. He did this to avoid uniting the Portuguese and Brazilian crowns. This was against the will of the Brazilians. The Portuguese people accepted Maria as their queen. This however would only be temporary. Her uncle Miguel seized the throne in 1828. He launched a coup d’état. Dona Maria’s reign was interrupted. She spent her early years in exile. She spent a considerable time in England. She later travelled to Brazil. The Marquis of Barbacena accompanied her. This seasoned diplomat shielded the young queen from danger.

Dona Maria’s exile was not in vain. Her father Pedro I returned to Europe in 1831. He was determined to restore his daughter’s claim to the Portuguese throne. He abdicated the Brazilian throne to do this. He was supported by liberal forces. He led a military expedition. He and his supporters eventually overthrew Miguel. Dona Maria was reinstated as queen in 1834.

Dona Maria’s reign was marked by political turmoil. She married twice. Her first marriage was to Augusto Duke of Leuchtenberg. He sadly died soon after. She later married Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg. He became King Fernando II. He ruled alongside her. Her many pregnancies were fraught with danger. She gave birth eleven times. Her eleventh child was stillborn. Dona Maria tragically died in childbirth in 1853. She was only 34 years old. Her dedication to her people remained steadfast. Her legacy as ‘The Good Mother’ endures. Dona Maria’s life was an extraordinary story. She was a resilient and devoted queen. Her story is forever intertwined with Rio de Janeiro. It is a story of a life begun in Brazil. A life filled with both triumph and tragedy.
