Beneath the Texas sun stands Dolores Church Grotto a testament to faith and community. This isn’t just a building. It’s a living history. Originally a small mission church called La Luz it stood near the Montopolis Bridge. Father Alfred Mendez a tireless priest served La Luz and four other churches known as the Holy Cross Mexican Missions. Imagine the journeys he made the dedication he showed.

Dolores Church Grotto wasn’t always here. The current structure rose in 1952 on the edge of Montopolis. Today it’s firmly at the heart of the neighborhood. The name itself is a story. It’s named for Nuestra Senora de Dolores Our Lady of Sorrows patroness of the Congregation of Holy Cross. This congregation the founders of Dolores Church Grotto worked far and wide. They spread their faith across the Americas even reaching to places like Bangladesh India and Uganda. They saw themselves as educators in the faith.

The Franciscanas Hijas de Misericordia added another layer to Dolores Church Grotto’s story. Founded in Mallorca Spain they arrived in Texas in 1962. They found a home here at Dolores in 1971. These sisters devoted themselves to caring for the poor. They ran hospitals schools kindergartens and provided social work and pastoral ministry. Their presence enriched the community deeply. Their commitment echoes through the halls of Dolores Church Grotto.
