Ever heard of a dorm that was once Austin’s tallest building? Well here it is, the Dobie Center. It’s a 27-story residence hall, soaring above the University of Texas at Austin campus. This architectural behemoth was finished in 1972, becoming the tallest building in Austin at that time! It even surpassed the Texas State Capitol, a landmark that had held that title for almost a century. Dobie was the first modernist building on the UT campus, bringing a fresh design aesthetic to the university’s landscape. Back then, it was privately owned but in 2021, the University of Texas, realizing the need for more on-campus housing, stepped in and purchased Dobie. Dobie Center isn’t just about housing. It also houses a two-story mall, restaurants, and specialty stores. You can find everything from an Emiliano’s Burrito Factory to a Target within the mall. You can even find a chapel in the mall, making it a real hub of student activity! Just imagine, getting your burrito fix while browsing through a comic book store, and then popping over to the chapel for a quick prayer. Dobie Center is known for its bustling atmosphere, offering convenience and a touch of extravagance in one place. Let’s step closer and take a closer look!
