Here in Pére Lachaise Cemetery lies Division 54. It’s a place where history whispers. This division is more than just a location. It’s a silent witness to France’s tumultuous past.

Division 54 holds stories of war and resilience. The 54e Division d’Infanterie played a role in both World War I and World War II. Created in August 1914, the 54e Division d’Infanterie was dissolved briefly in October of the same year. It reappeared in September 1939 at the start of World War II.

The division’s journey through World War I was short but intense. Mobilized in the 4th military region it moved to Charny-sur-Meuse. They occupied areas toward Damvillers and Ornes. The division engaged in an offensive toward the Northeast. Combat took place near Spincourt and Gouraincourt. A retreat followed through Gremilly toward Verdun’s south. They were then involved near Esnes-en-Argonne and Montzéville. Fighting continued near Gercourt and Bois de Forges. The division faced dislocation and dissolution.

In World War II the division was resurrected. It stationed south of Paris in towns like Gif and Sceaux. Their mission included maintaining order and preparing for enemy airborne actions. The 54e Division d’Infanterie reinforced the 8e armée near Colmar. They were positioned as a reserve unit within the 7e corps d’armée. The division later relieved the 47e DI. A battalion was detached to support the fortified sector.

As the war progressed the 54e DI found itself in the middle of conflict. They defended areas between Sundhouse and Appenwihr-Vogelsheim. The German attack in May 1940 triggered a series of rapid deployments. The division retreated to the Vosges valleys. The sector of Ribeauvillé was dissolved.

In June 1940 the Germans launched Operation Kleiner Bär. The 54e DI retreated toward the Vosges crest. They positioned in three groups. These groups were in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, Col du Bonhomme and Col de la Schlucht. The enemy pressure caused the division to weaken. Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines and Kaysersberg fell. The division faced encirclement. On June 22, 1940, the 54e DI ceased to exist. General Coradin was captured.

Look closely at the tomb of the Frank family. George Frank died on September 17, 1871. Marie Louise Frank died on February 20, 1874. It is a reminder of the personal stories intertwined with larger historical events. The building is listed as a historical monument of France.

Division 54 is a poignant reminder of sacrifice. It reflects the ebb and flow of military history. The division stands as a place of reflection amidst the stones of Pére Lachaise. The echoes of the past are all around.
