Emerging from the mists of World War I, the 102nd Division stands as a testament to French resilience. Division 102 wasn’t always a fortress division. It began as a territorial infantry division, formed on May 25, 1915. Imagine the young reservists, many fresh-faced and eager, joining the ranks of the 286th, 292nd, 326th, and 342nd Territorial Infantry Regiments. These men, part of the 13th Army Corps, marched under the banner of Division 102, contributing their strength to the Sixth Army. Their service, though lasting only a year, played a crucial role in the larger conflict. The Division 102 was dissolved on May 1, 1916, its soldiers reassigned, their experiences etched into the annals of the Great War. Decades later, the flames of war reignited, and the 102nd Division was reborn. This time, it took on a new form: a fortress division. During the Battle of France in May 1940, Division 102 stood as a bulwark against the German onslaught. Comprising the 148th Fortress Infantry Regiment, the 42nd and 52nd Colonial Machine Gun Half Brigades, the 3rd Machine Gun Battalion, and the 160th and 218th Artillery Regiments, Division 102 was a formidable force. Under the command of General André Corap, these men braced themselves at the Meuse, their mission to hold back the tide of the German advance. On May 14th, they faced the might of the 6th Panzer Division at Monthermé. Picture the scene: the roar of tanks, the staccato bursts of machine-gun fire, the acrid smell of smoke filling the air. Division 102 held their ground, their resistance fierce and unwavering. But the enemy outmaneuvered them, attacking from the rear, forcing a strategic withdrawal. Though ultimately defeated, the bravery and resilience of Division 102 shone through. They bought valuable time, delaying the German advance and contributing to the larger Allied effort. Their story serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during wartime, a testament to the enduring spirit of those who fought under the banner of Division 102.
