A beacon of hope amidst the bustling cityscape, the Divine Church of Prayer stands tall. It’s a testament to faith and resilience. The Divine Church of Prayer, originally known as First Church of Deliverance, traces its roots back to a divine revelation on a Chicago bus in 1928. Reverend Clarence Henry Cobbs, a young man touched by the Spirit of God, heeded the call to establish a sanctuary of deliverance. The church’s first service, held in Reverend Cobbs’ home on May 8, 1929, marked the beginning of a remarkable journey. The Divine Church of Prayer’s first building, at 4155 S. State St., was just the start. A move to a former hat factory at 4315 S. Wabash Ave. in 1933 marked a significant expansion. This building, redesigned by renowned architect Walter Thomas Bailey, became a symbol of the church’s growing presence. Tragedy struck in 1945 when a fire ravaged the sanctuary. But from the ashes rose a renewed spirit of determination. The church was repaired, adorned with murals by Fred Jones. The main entrance doors, carved from a century-old oak tree, stand as symbols of strength and endurance. The Divine Church of Prayer’s history is filled with remarkable firsts. It was the first Spiritual Church in Chicago, the first to incorporate gospel music into its services, and the first African American church to broadcast its services on television in 1953. The church’s commitment to serving the community extends beyond its walls. The Maggie Drummond Community Center and Day Care, established during the Great Depression, continues to provide vital resources and support. The church also played a role in disaster relief efforts, establishing a Mobile Canteen after a devastating traffic accident in 1950. The Divine Church of Prayer, a beacon of hope in Chicago, has continually risen to meet the needs of its community and beyond.
