Eleven tons of bronze gaze across Jakarta. That’s the weight of the statue atop the Dirgantara Monument. This isn’t just any monument. It’s a symbol of Indonesia’s ambition its spirit of flight and its push for independence.

The Dirgantara Monument stands tall. It’s a powerful statement. President Sukarno commissioned it in 1964. He wanted to honor the Indonesian Air Force. He also wanted to celebrate the nation’s dreams of conquering space. The location was carefully chosen. It sits near the former Air Force headquarters. It also served as a welcoming sight for those arriving from Halim Perdanakusuma Airport.

The monument itself is quite striking. It features a 27-meter-high arched base. On top sits an 11-meter-tall bronze sculpture. The figure is often called the “space man” representing Indonesia’s aspiration for space travel. The design wasn’t simple. Edhi Sunarso the sculptor worked with the Arca family of Yogyakarta. The Decorative Bronze Art Bronze Sculpture of Yogyakarta handled the casting. The project was overseen by PN Hutama Karya with Ir Sutami as the architect. Funding for the monument even came in part from the sale of President Sukarno’s personal car.

Construction wasn’t smooth sailing. The 1965 coup attempt significantly delayed the project. The bronze statue sat incomplete for over a year. Whispers circulated that the statue resembled an eye-gouging device used during alleged tortures. President Sukarno vehemently denied these rumors. Finally the bronze sections each weighing about a ton were assembled. The Dirgantara Monument was completed in late 1966.

Today the Dirgantara Monument stands as a landmark. It’s seen by many drivers. It’s admired by many pedestrians. It stands between Jalan Gatot Subroto and Jalan M T Haryono. The monument has several nicknames. Some call it “Truper” others “Seven-up Man”. The Dutch even called it “Ard Schenk”. These names speak to its unique design and the various ways people interpret its symbolism. The Dirgantara Monument continues to inspire awe and reflection. It reminds us of Indonesia’s rich history and its unwavering aspirations for the future.
