What if a train station could birth a town? Here at Dique Luján, that’s precisely what happened. Dique Luján isn’t just a charming village nestled in the Tigre Partido of Greater Buenos Aires. It’s a testament to the transformative power of infrastructure and the enduring spirit of a community. In the late 19th century, these low-lying lands belonged to Benito Villanueva, a prominent politician who dreamed of creating a “City of the Delta.” He envisioned a bustling metropolis, crisscrossed by canals, a vibrant hub for trade and tourism. The arrival of the railway in 1914 was the catalyst. A small station was built, and beside it, a quarry was dug to elevate the land. This quarry, or “dique,” filled with water, became a local landmark. The station and the adjacent “dique” on the Luján River gave the town its name: Dique Luján. Villanueva’s grand vision for the City of the Delta never fully materialized. Challenges like flooding and changing economic tides shifted the town’s trajectory. But Dique Luján found its own identity. The railway, intended as a gateway to a metropolis, instead nurtured a close-knit community. The formio factory, established in 1928, became the economic heart of Dique Luján. It employed hundreds, drawing families to the area and spurring the development of homes, shops, and community institutions. Dique Luján even had its moment in the spotlight. In 1958, the train station appeared in scenes of the film “El hombre que hizo el milagro,” offering a glimpse of the town’s unique charm. The railway, however, was not to last. In 1967, the line connecting Dique Luján to Ingeniero Maschwitz was closed, the tracks eventually lifted, creating what locals now call the “dead track.” This loss could have been a devastating blow, but Dique Luján adapted. The paved road from Ingeniero Maschwitz brought buses and increased connectivity. New schools, a health center, and a fire station were built, solidifying the town’s resilience. Today, Dique Luján retains its tranquil charm, a testament to its unexpected origins. The “dead track,” now a tree-lined street, stands as a reminder of a bygone era, while the “dique” remains a central feature. As you stand here, imagine the hustle and bustle of the formio factory. Picture the steam trains chugging along the now-vanished railway line. Dique Luján is a town born from a quarry, shaped by a railway, and sustained by its community’s unwavering spirit.
