Have you ever heard of a stadium named after a young hero? Here at the Kapten I Wayan Dipta Stadium, the spirit of I Wayan Dipta lives on. Dipta Stadium isn’t just a place for thrilling soccer matches. It’s a tribute to a local hero. I Wayan Dipta was a commander in the Indonesian youth movement during the fight for independence against the Dutch. Tragically, at only 20 years old, he was killed on April 12, 1946, after enduring brutal torture. The stadium’s name, Kapten I Wayan Dipta Stadium, serves as a constant reminder of Dipta’s sacrifice for his country. His courage resonates within these walls, inspiring the players of Bali United, the stadium’s home team. Originally built in 1977 and officially opened in 2003, Dipta Stadium has seen its share of renovations. In 2014, Bali United adopted the stadium as their home ground. They invested in upgrades, including new lighting, improved dressing rooms, and restroom repairs. More extensive renovations took place between 2017 and 2018. These improvements included an LED perimeter board, installed in October 2017, designed to enhance the stadium’s visual appeal and offer advertising space for local businesses. 2018 brought further enhancements to prepare for Asian competitions. The stadium’s lighting was boosted to meet AFC standards, and restrooms were upgraded. Plans were also underway to expand the seating capacity by 1,200, eventually increasing it even further to its current capacity. In 2020, Dipta Stadium underwent another significant transformation as it was selected as a venue for the 2021 FIFA U-20 World Cup. The renovations, funded by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, included improvements to meet FIFA standards. The stadium now boasts 2,400 lux lighting, along with new seating including special seats for the disabled, media, VIPs, and even a royal box. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a modern sporting venue, the Kapten I Wayan Dipta Stadium stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of a young hero and the passion for soccer in Bali.
