Gazda Attila, a modern explorer, meticulously surveyed the Diósdi Római-barlang in 2005. His detailed maps reveal the cave’s secrets. The Diósdi Római-barlang stretches 13.6 meters long. It has a modest depth of 0.2 meters and a height of 1.3 meters. The cave’s entrance, a mere opening of 3 meters wide and 1.33 meters high, hints at the wonders within. Located on the Tétényi Plateau within the Duna-Ipoly National Park, Diósdi Római-barlang whispers tales of ages past. Formed during the Middle Miocene Sarmatian period, the cave’s creation is a geological marvel. Corrosion along bedding planes sculpted its form. The Diósdi Római-barlang lies close to the surface, with only about a meter of rock above. This single-level, horizontal cave lacks formations. Its walls, stained black by soot, tell of human presence. Though access is challenging, Diósdi Római-barlang invites exploration. Basic caving gear and some easy climbing are all that’s needed. The cave is freely accessible to those who dare to venture in. Local lore adds a touch of mystique to the Diósdi Római-barlang. A story, recorded by Halász Árpád, speaks of a hermit who once resided within. This hermit spun tales of epic battles against bearded warriors. He would venture into the nearby village for food and water, until one day, he vanished without a trace. Some believe the hermit was a Turkish Muslim seeking refuge. He was sometimes seen on the cliff, praying eastward, his turban a stark contrast against the rock. The Diósdi Római-barlang first appeared in literature in 1963, simply as “Római barlang” thanks to Halász Árpád. Its present name, Diósdi Római-barlang, solidified its place in local history in 2005. The cave’s discovery came about through quarrying. Halász Árpád’s 1941 exploration marked the beginning of its documented history. He mapped the cave and captured its essence in photographs. He even unearthed prehistoric and Migration Period pottery shards within its depths. A Roman road once passed near the cave. This proximity led to the “Római” (Roman) designation in its name, adding a layer of historical intrigue to this hidden gem.
