Originally part of the Diocese of Tlalnepantla, the Diócesis Católica de Cuautitlán Izcalli carved its own identity. In 1984, it lost some of its area to the newly formed Diocese of Atlacomulco. A more dramatic change occurred in 2014 when Pope Francis created the Diocese of Izcalli.
