Beyond the bustling streets and vibrant markets lies a spiritual cornerstone. It is the Diocese of Kalookan. Established on June 28, 2003, by Pope John Paul II, the Diocese of Kalookan emerged from the Archdiocese of Manila. This marked a new chapter for the Catholic community in Caloocan, Malabon and Navotas.

The story of the Diocese of Kalookan is intertwined with faith and community. Its canonical erection occurred on August 22, 2003. Deogracias S. Iñiguez was installed as its first bishop. He previously served as the Bishop of Iba, Zambales. Iñiguez led the diocese for over a decade until his resignation on January 25, 2013.

Following Iñiguez’s resignation, Francisco M. De Leon stepped in. He was the Auxiliary Bishop of Antipolo. De Leon served as the Apostolic Administrator of the diocese. On October 14, 2015, Pope Francis appointed Pablo Virgilio S. David as the second bishop of Kalookan. David was installed on January 2, 2016. He had previously served as the auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of San Fernando in Pampanga.

In an extraordinary turn of events, Bishop David’s dedication was further recognized. On October 6, 2024, Pope Francis appointed him a cardinal. This appointment became effective on December 7, 2024. David is the tenth Filipino to join the College of Cardinals. He is the first cardinal from the Diocese of Kalookan. Also he is the first cardinal from any diocese in the Philippines. The Synod of Bishops elected David a member of the Ordinary Council of the General Secretariat of the Synod on October 23.
