Glimpse upwards! See the Dingwall Building’s art-deco facade. It stands as a testament to Auckland’s resilience and architectural innovation.

The Dingwall Building was built in 1935. It rose from the ground after new regulations were enacted. These regulations followed the devastating 1931 Napier earthquake.

This building was the first in Auckland constructed under these stricter standards. The regulations ensured greater structural integrity. The Dingwall Building is made of reinforced concrete.

Gummer & Ford designed the Dingwall Building. John J Booth handled the structural engineering. The architects cantilevered the front facade. This created an uninterrupted line of glass on each of its eight storeys.

David McNair Dingwall founded the Dingwall Trust. The trust originally provided a stable home for children affected by major events. World War I and the Great Depression left many children vulnerable. The trust opened in February 1930.

David Dingwall instructed the formation of the Dingwall Trust Orphanage in his will. He had no children of his own. His vision was to create a high-quality uplifting environment for children.

The original orphanage was a 50-hectare farm in Papatoetoe. Red-brick cottages housed the children. Gummer and Ford also designed these cottages. The property provided learning and work experience. Children gained skills to find jobs and build their lives.

Today, Papatoetoe occupies most of the original farm. The red-brick cottages still stand. They are modernised inside. They continue to provide a haven for children.

The Dingwall Building we see today is a different endeavour. However, both projects share architectural visionaries Gummer and Ford. The building stands as a reminder of Auckland’s past. It represents progress, innovation, and community support. The Dingwall Building is a proud landmark.
