Remember James Dilworth a farmer investor and philanthropist. Dilworth was born in Northern Ireland in 1815. He left his wealth to found Dilworth School. It would educate young men from families facing hardship.

Dilworth School opened in 1906. It began with just eight boys. The school’s mission remains true to James Dilworth’s will. Dilworth aims to support young men. They should reach their potential. They should become good members of society. The vision is to develop young men. They should have good character. They should achieve excellence. They should flourish in life.

Dilworth School is now the largest full boarding school in Australasia. Students receive scholarships. These scholarships cover education and boarding costs. The Dilworth Trust Board runs the school. The board spends $12 million annually. This is funded by landholdings around Auckland.

Many apply but only a few are chosen. Between 500 and 600 families apply each year. The school can only accommodate about one in six. This makes the selection process immensely difficult.

The school has three campuses today. There is a junior campus for Years 5 to 8. The senior campus accommodates Years 9 to 13. There is also a rural campus called Te Haerenga.

Dilworth’s boarding houses are named after places in Ireland. They are Tyrone Dungannon Donegal and Armagh. The school maintains ties with the Royal School Dungannon. James Dilworth attended this school. Each year pupils from Dilworth go to Dungannon. They serve as tutors on scholarship. Pupils from Dungannon come to Auckland to work at Dilworth.

Dilworth has a rich history. It includes alumni in many fields. There are politicians academics and athletes. Some have even strayed into journalism. Former Prime Minister Mike Moore attended Dilworth. So did Governor-General Sir David Beattie.

The school has faced challenges too. There have been investigations into historical abuse. Dilworth has addressed these issues. The school seeks to provide a safe environment.

Principal MacLean focused on making Dilworth a happy school. He created a peer mediation scheme. Senior boys help younger students resolve disputes. The school educates students to resist bullying.

Dilworth strives to give boys an aiding hand. They overcome disadvantages like the loss of a parent. They can deal with financial hardship. Dilworth gives boys a chance to compete. They can succeed in the world.

Dilworth School has a lasting legacy. It transforms lives. It creates opportunities for young men. It upholds the vision of James Dilworth.
