Standing proudly on Garron Lane, Dilkes Academy is much more than just a school. It’s a testament to the changing landscape of education in South Ockendon. It first opened its doors in 1952, back when the area was a booming housing estate. Originally, it was actually two different schools, one for infants and one for juniors, but they were eventually merged into a single primary school.
Dilkes Academy isn’t just a place where children learn their ABCs and 123s. It’s a vibrant hub, bursting with activity. There’s a large assembly hall where the kids get to show off their dance moves and cheer on their school’s football team. They have a special resource provision called the Personalised Learning Centre, a place where kids with specific learning needs are given extra attention. They’ve even made it part of their curriculum to learn about the history of their own school!
This means, however, that Dilkes Academy also has a bit of a secret. One of their teachers, a passionate history buff, stumbled upon a hidden gem while organizing the school’s archives. Tucked away in a dusty box were original plans for the building. The blueprints revealed a unique detail: they showed a secret room, hidden beneath the playground. While nobody knows exactly what lurks down there, the staff have promised to launch an excavation project one day. Until then, this mysterious room remains a thrilling mystery, a silent whisper from the past, waiting to be uncovered.
