In 1447, King René began construction on the imposing square tower that still stands today. Later, Louis XIV, keen to assert his authority over Marseille, further fortified the Digue du Fort Saint-Jean in 1660. He added new structures. These included an arsenal for galleys. Interestingly, these additions were designed to face the city, not the sea, reflecting the king’s intention to control the sometimes rebellious Marseillais. During the French Revolution, the fort was a prison that housed prominent figures. Among them were Louis Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, and his sons. A darker chapter unfolded in 1794. Over a hundred Jacobin prisoners met a grim end within the fort’s walls. In the 20th century, the Digue du Fort Saint-Jean endured further upheaval. The Germans used the fort to store ammunition during World War II. A devastating explosion in 1944 wrecked significant parts of the structure. Today, the Digue du Fort Saint-Jean has been painstakingly restored and connected to the vibrant district of Le Panier by two footbridges.
