A single rusted rail track emerges from the freight car of Die Rampe. It stretches towards us, a stark reminder of the journeys that began here. Die Rampe is more than a sculpture. It’s a chilling echo of Kassel’s darkest period. This memorial, created by E. R. Nele, stands as a testament to the horrors of the Holocaust. It depicts ghostly figures falling from a freight car, their bodies fading, leaving only empty garments. The figures represent the Jewish citizens and forced laborers deported from Kassel during the Nazi regime. E. R. Nele, daughter of documenta founder Arnold Bode, witnessed the transport of forced laborers as a child. Die Rampe is her way of confronting those traumatic memories. The Henschelwerk factory, once located near this site, employed around 6,000 forced laborers during the war. They produced not only locomotives and vehicles, but also tanks, airplanes, and missiles. Die Rampe’s location, near the university, reinforces the connection between the past and the present. It serves as a constant reminder for future generations. The sculpture’s history is as poignant as its subject matter. Just days after its inauguration in 1985, it was set on fire. The restoration took seven years. In 2011, Die Rampe was temporarily removed due to university expansion work. It was finally reinstalled in its current location in 2017. The sculpture’s resilience mirrors the enduring memory of the victims. Die Rampe invites us to reflect on the fragility of human life and the importance of remembrance. It’s a stark, powerful, and unforgettable memorial.
