Question: What became of Karlsruhe’s Friedenskirche after its demolition? This plaque marks the spot where the Friedenskirche once stood. It was a Methodist church hall in Karlsruhe’s Südweststadt district.

The Friedenskirche’s story begins in 1899. The Methodist community commissioned Hermann Billing’s architectural firm to design it. Construction finished in 1900. The church’s location was Karlstraße 49b. The building costs were significant. Sources vary. Some say 65000 Mark. Others claim 80000 Mark. The Friedenskirche’s dedication took place on November 11 1900.

The Friedenskirche survived World War II. It met its end in 1968. This happened during the redevelopment of the Kriegsstraße and Karlstraße corner. The Karlstraße was widened.

1968 was a pivotal year. The Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical Community. This merger formed the Evangelical Methodist Church. The Evangelical Community already had a church nearby. It was the Erlöserkirche on Hermann-Billing-Straße 11. Built in 1961, it became the new home for the Friedenskirche’s congregation.

Let’s talk about the Friedenskirche’s design. The prayer hall was on the first upper floor. It spanned 170 square meters. The hall was 7.50 meters high. The ground floor had apartments. These were for the community board. More apartments existed on the second floor.

The Friedenskirche’s architecture was historicist. It drew inspiration from late Gothic style. The facade featured Sulzfeld sandstone. White plaster surfaces completed the look.

Though the Friedenskirche is gone, its memory lives on. This plaque stands as a reminder of its presence. It tells a story of faith, community and change in Karlsruhe. Take a moment to reflect on the Friedenskirche. Consider its impact on the city’s spiritual landscape.
