Is there anything more delightful than the infectious joy of a miniature railway? Here at the Diamond Valley Railway, that joy has been echoing through the Eltham Lower Park since 1961. It’s a testament to the enduring appeal of miniature trains, a love shared by children and adults alike. The Diamond Valley Railway isn’t just a whimsical ride; it’s a journey through time, powered by the passion of its volunteers. The railway started its life in a different park, Chelsworth Park in Ivanhoe. After a devastating flood in 1959, the future looked bleak. But the dream didn’t die. A dedicated group, led by the visionary Clem Meadmore, refused to let the Chelsworth Park Railway fade away. They found a new home here in Eltham Lower Park and, piece by piece, rebuilt their beloved railway. Imagine them, hauling old rails and sleepers, laying the tracks through what was then untamed bushland. Their dedication paid off. On October 29th, 1961, the Diamond Valley Railway welcomed its first passengers, their laughter mingling with the chug of the engine. The railway has grown over the years, but the original spirit of camaraderie and love for miniature trains remains.
