Deyi Secondary School first opened its doors in January 1980. Back then, it was known as Teck Ghee Secondary School. There were about 1,700 students at the time. The campus was built on 3.45 hectares of land. It cost S$4.6 million. Mr. Wu Tat Huan was the first principal. The school was officially opened on May 5, 1982. Mr. Lee Yock Suan, a Member of Parliament, did the honors. In 1981, the school’s name changed to Deyi Secondary School. This aligned with the use of Pinyin.

A ceramic studio and kiln were added in 1981. Deyi Secondary School moved to a new location on June 24, 2002. The official opening was on May 20, 2005. Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, the Minister of Education, officiated the event.

Deyi Secondary School has a niche in performing arts. The Aesthetics Development Programme supports this. It allows talented students to join the school through Direct School Admission. This includes both local and international students. All lower secondary students study drama and dance. Deyi also has a Talent Development Programme. This helps performing arts students gain accreditation. The school works with reputable institutions for this.

Deyi Secondary School has about 20 Co-curricular activities. These include sports, uniformed groups, and musical groups. There are also clubs and societies. The school’s performing arts groups have won many awards. They excel in English Drama, Movement and Dance, Military Band, and Choir. The Military Band won Gold with honors in 2008 and 2010. They were also named Best Drum Major and Best display band.

Deyi Secondary School celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2015. In 2018, the school completed its indoor sports hall. They held a mid-autumn homecoming for alumni and ex-staff.
