In 1764, a grand mansion arose near Amalienborg Palace. It was named Det Gule Palæ, the Yellow Palace. This mansion marked a pivotal moment in Copenhagen’s architectural history. It was the first example of Neoclassical style in the city. Det Gule Palæ was originally built for Frederik Bargum, a wealthy merchant involved in the slave trade. The architect, Nicolas-Henri Jardin, chose a neoclassical design that stood out against the prevailing Rococo style of Frederiksstaden. Det Gule Palæ’s elegant design caught the eye of the Danish royal family. In 1810, King Frederick VI acquired the mansion. It served as a guest residence for visiting relatives. A significant chapter in Det Gule Palæ’s story began in 1837. Prince Christian of Glücksborg, the future King Christian IX, moved in. Det Gule Palæ became the birthplace of his children. Among them were Frederik VIII of Denmark and Alexandra, the future Queen of the United Kingdom. Even George I of Greece and Maria Feodorovna, the Empress of Russia, were born within these walls. Det Gule Palæ remained a royal residence for many years. Prince Valdemar, Christian IX’s youngest son, lived there with his family until 1939. Today, Det Gule Palæ is managed by the Danish Palaces and Properties Agency. It houses the Lord Chamberlain’s Office. The Guard’s Stable, designed by Jørgen Hansen Koch, stands on the grounds. It was built in 1842 for both the royal family’s horses and those of the Royal Guards. The stable’s roof was later converted into a Mansard style, adding living space. Det Gule Palæ stands as a testament to changing times. It’s a witness to Copenhagen’s architectural evolution, royal history, and the complexities of its past.
