Red shutters now adorn its facade. But once the Det Blå Pakhus boasted a vibrant blue mansard roof and blue shutters. This stunning 18th-century warehouse stands proudly on Copenhagen’s waterfront. Its neoclassical design is a testament to the architectural genius of Caspar Frederik Harsdorff. He masterminded its construction between 1781 and 1783. Originally intended for Royal Greenland it ultimately became the property of the newly formed Baltic-Guinea Company.

Imagine the bustling activity within its walls. Tobacco sugar and cotton filled its spacious interior. These goods were carefully stored within the sturdy Pomeranian pine beams. The company’s brief five-year lifespan ended quickly. However Det Blå Pakhus continued its service. It became a crucial grain store.

The building’s history is not solely about commerce. It also showcases remarkable adaptations. In the late 1970s architects Flemming Hertz and Ole Ramsgaard Thomsen masterfully transformed it. They converted the warehouse into comfortable modern condominiums. They raised the timber structure and doubled the number of windows to increase light and air. This ensured the new residents enjoyed ample living space and natural light.

Its strategic location on the Larsens Plads waterfront speaks to its functional past. Goods were hoisted and moved into the central section with ease. The spaciousness allowed for efficient storage and handling of trade goods. Today the once-industrial forecourts are beautifully landscaped. They are now private green spaces for the building’s residents.

The Det Blå Pakhus isn’t simply a building. It is a living memory. A testament to Copenhagen’s rich maritime history and adaptable spirit. It beautifully showcases the transition from warehouse to residential building. This remarkable architectural landmark continues to grace Copenhagen’s picturesque waterfront. It stands as a timeless symbol of the city’s vibrant past.
