Did you know DeSoto High School wasn’t always on Eagle Drive? This impressive building standing before you has a rich history. DeSoto High School opened its doors in 1956. Its first location was at 200 East Belt Line Road. A new campus opened in 1962 just down the road. But the district kept growing. By 1973 voters approved a $7.5 million bond. This included funds for a brand-new high school. A groundbreaking ceremony took place on February 15 1974 at the current site 600 Eagle Drive. Central Texas Construction of Terrell won the building contract. The cost was around $3100000. The school finally opened its doors on August 16 1976. The new building was a major step for the school and the community. It shows DeSoto’s commitment to education. This commitment is evident in DeSoto High School’s growth.
DeSoto High has faced challenges. In 2011 The Dallas Morning News reported lower than expected college readiness. The district responded quickly. They added to the school to improve its college and career academies. DeSoto High School boasts impressive programs. It offers International Baccalaureate early college and academic magnet programs. These programs help high-achieving students prepare for college. DeSoto High School has also been in the news for a unique reason. In 2005 the student newspaper The Eagle Eye investigated questionable hiring practices. Their investigation led to four students and their advisor receiving the Courage in Student Journalism Award. Each winner received $5000. The school’s athletic programs have been incredibly successful. The DeSoto Eagles have won numerous state championships. Their victories include baseball track and field basketball and football. DeSoto’s football team won its first state championship in 2016 at AT&T Stadium. The girls basketball team also achieved a major milestone. They secured their first state title in 2021.
