Step through the rusty iron gate, and suddenly, the Parisian city noise fades away. You are in the heart of the D’e’sert de Retz. Imagine, a place of quiet contemplation, in the midst of a busy metropolis. It’s a 17th-century garden, a grand design of a man who sought a retreat beyond the Parisian bustle. This park was named after the village of Retz, right by the forest of Marly, where François-Nicolas-Henri Racine de Monville, a wealthy aristocrat, found himself drawn.

This was his sanctuary, where he built lavish and elaborate structures, some inspired by classical and gothic themes, some others mimicking Chinese pagodas. They’re called fabriques, these unusual buildings, often with theatrical forms. The Temple to Pan, a romantic ruin, is a standout. It’s where he hosted lavish parties, bringing in prominent figures like Marie Antoinette and even Thomas Jefferson.

In his time, De Monville designed and built twenty structures, which stood as a testament to his passion. De Monville’s dream was to create a place of escape, a fusion of nature and fantasy, and a retreat from the city he craved. But time faded the glory of his vision. Now, only seven fabriques remain, remnants of De Monville’s glorious creations.

Imagine parties teeming with life, then imagine the slow demise, as his legacy fell into disrepair. Time has taken its toll on these structures, leaving them as picturesque ruins, captivating with their whispers from the past. Today, the D’e’sert de Retz is a place for reflection, a glimpse into a bygone era’s grandeur.
