What’s in a name? In Derrimut, a Melbourne suburb, the name whispers a story of a man caught between two worlds. Derrimut, the Boonwurrung leader, his name meaning “pursue” or “hunt”, embodies a tale of survival and compromise in the face of European settlement. Derrimut was born around 1810. He walked the lands stretching from the Werribee River to Western Port, leading his people through a time of immense change. Derrimut is remembered for his act of warning early settlers, Fawkner and Aitken, of impending attacks by other Aboriginal tribes. This act, a blend of diplomacy and survival strategy, painted him in contrasting hues. Was he a savior, a traitor, or simply a man trying to navigate a world turned upside down? Derrimut’s actions weren’t isolated. He acted with the consent of Billibellary, another influential Kulin leader. Together, they tried to maintain a fragile peace amidst the clash of cultures. Imagine Derrimut in 1835, witnessing the arrival of Fawkner’s schooner, the Enterprize, on the Yarra River. The arrival heralded a new era, one of encroaching settlements and shifting power dynamics. Derrimut, ever the pragmatist, engaged with the settlers, even joining them on hunting and fishing trips. He traveled with Fawkner to Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania), a journey that further solidified his connection to the colonial world. Yet, even as he engaged with the settlers, Derrimut didn’t forget his own people. He fought for their rights, particularly their right to live on their traditional land at the Mordialloc Reserve. He challenged the appropriation of his ancestral lands, confronting a magistrate outside the Bank of Victoria, claiming the very ground it stood on. Derrimut’s life was marked by personal tragedies. His first wife was abducted by sealers. In his later years, he faced illness and hardship. He died at the Melbourne Benevolent Asylum in 1864. His tombstone, erected by colonists, commemorates his warning that saved the settlers, forever etching his name into the narrative of Melbourne’s founding. Derrimut’s story, a complex tapestry of collaboration and resistance, reminds us that history is rarely black and white. It is a story of a leader grappling with impossible choices, a man whose name echoes through the streets of the suburb that bears it, a testament to a time of profound transformation.
