A deep ford once marked this very spot. Deptford’s name whispers of its origins a crossing point for travelers. This area wasn’t always a bustling part of London. Deptford began as two small communities. One huddled near the ford of the River Ravensbourne. The other was a fishing village along the Thames.

Henry VIII changed all that. He established the Royal Dockyard here in 1513. Deptford’s history is forever entwined with this dockyard. It became the first of the Royal Dockyards a major shipbuilding centre. The yard attracted skilled craftsmen from across the land. Even Peter the Great came to study shipbuilding here.

Imagine the scene. Queen Elizabeth I herself visited the Royal Dockyard. In 1581 she knighted Sir Francis Drake aboard the Golden Hind. The air would have thrummed with excitement. The Thames would have bustled with activity. The smell of tar and timber would have hung heavy in the air.

Deptford’s connection to the sea runs deep. Captain James Cook’s third voyage began from here. The HMS Resolution set sail from Deptford’s docks. The stories of exploration and adventure echo through these streets.

But Deptford is also steeped in darker tales. The playwright Christopher Marlowe met a mysterious end in a Deptford house. The circumstances of his death remain shrouded in mystery. Whispers of a drunken brawl linger. Some even suggest assassination.

The docks thrived for centuries. They were a vital part of the Elizabethan exploration. They were also involved in the slave trade. Olaudah Equiano was sold from one ship’s captain to another right here in Deptford. His later work contributed to the abolition of the slave trade.

As the Royal Navy shifted its focus and larger ships struggled with the Thames’ navigation. Deptford’s docks eventually declined. The last dock Convoys Wharf closed in 2000. This marked an end to an era. The area was used as the City of London Corporation’s Foreign Cattle Market. From four continents live animals came to Deptford for a time.

Deptford faced economic hardship. Bombing during the Second World War added to its woes. Yet Deptford persists. It is an area of regeneration. New homes are being built. The town centre is being revitalized. The riverside is being transformed. Today you see a blend of old and new a testament to Deptford’s enduring spirit. A place where history and modernity meet.
