In September 2012, Deptford Green School swung open its doors, a brand new building humming with anticipation. This wasn’t just a fresh coat of paint. This was a rebirth. Deptford Green School had previously occupied two separate locations: a lower school on Edward Street and an upper school on Amersham Vale. The old lower school building on Edward Street was demolished in 2010 to make way for this very structure where we stand now. During construction, the upper school was temporarily housed in portable classrooms for two years. Imagine the students and teachers, adapting to their temporary learning spaces, all while knowing a state-of-the-art school was rising just down the road. This new Deptford Green School, completed in September 2012, was part of the government’s “Building Schools for the Future” program. It represents a significant investment in the future of Deptford’s children. Bill Gates himself visited Deptford Green School in January 2012. He praised the school, calling it “a model of a global school with socially conscious students.” That’s quite an endorsement. Now, as we stand before Deptford Green School, picture the bustling hallways filled with students. They’re learning about everything from the history of Deptford itself to the complexities of the Cold War. They’re exploring literature, delving into drama, and developing their critical thinking skills. Deptford Green School isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to the power of community, the importance of education, and the potential within every student.
