The Department of Zoology was established in July 1961. It was the second of its kind after the University of Colombo. The Department of Zoology conducts a comprehensive course. It covers Animal Diversity, Ecology, Behaviour, Physiology, Genetics, Embryology, and Histology.
The Department stresses applied aspects of Zoology. It conducts courses in Techniques in Zoology, Fisheries, and Entomology. You can also study Parasitology, Wildlife Management, and Environmental Science.
The Department of Zoology provides a wide range of knowledge. This includes Animal Diversity, Cell Biology & Biochemistry, and Ecology. Students also study Development Biology and Genetics. Parasitology, Animal Behavior, and Evolution are taught here. Fisheries, Fish Biology, and Applied Entomology are also covered. Human Biology, Aquaculture, and Fish diseases are studied. Other areas include Laboratory Techniques, Environmental Science, and Marine Biology. Students learn about Mammalian Biology and Comparative Anatomy. Natural Resource Management and Developmental Planning are also key. The department offers Advanced Pest Management.
