Departamento Pilcaniyeu, in the Río Negro province of Argentina, translates to “place of ducks.” The name comes from the native Araucanian words “pilkan” (ducks) and “niyeu” (place). Departamento Pilcaniyeu emerged from this crossroads, a blend of indigenous heritage and the influx of European and Syrian-Lebanese immigrants. Drawn by the promise of land under the 1891 Avellaneda Law, settlers established estancias in the surrounding areas, primarily for sheep farming.
