President Adolfo Lopez Mateos signed the decree creating CINVESTAV. This happened in 1961. The aim was to develop researchers and specialized professors. They would address technological problems facing the country. CINVESTAV began with departments in physiology mathematics physics biochemistry and electrical engineering.

CINVESTAV has expanded since its founding. It now has nine units across Mexico. This decentralization began in 1980 with the Merida unit. Over the years CINVESTAV has produced thousands of graduates. These alumni contribute to Mexico and the world.

CINVESTAV excels in postgraduate education. Many of its programs are recognized internationally. The National Council of Science and Technology acknowledges its quality. CINVESTAV received the Thomson Reuters Prize in 2009. This recognized its high number of citations per researcher.
