A majestic clock tower piercing the sky. That’s Denny Hall. Built in 1895 Denny Hall is the oldest structure on the University of Washington’s current campus. It stands as a testament to Seattle pioneer Arthur Denny who donated land for the original campus.

Denny Hall wasn’t always called Denny Hall. Initially known as the Administration Building it received its current name in 1910. This magnificent French Renaissance Revival building wasn’t just an administrative center. It housed all six of the university’s colleges. Imagine 200 students learning in 35 rooms. A 700-seat lecture hall stood within its walls. A library held 6000 volumes.

Denny Hall played a significant role in campus life. From 1904 to 1934 it was the heart of Campus Day. Students and faculty gathered on its steps. They worked together improving the campus. They shared a meal and listened to the president’s address. This annual celebration fostered a sense of community.

The building has undergone numerous renovations. In the 1950s its interior was completely rebuilt. The 1990s brought restoration and rehabilitation efforts. A major renovation completed in 2016 included seismic upgrades and accessibility improvements. The original slate roof and copper cupola were painstakingly restored. The Varsity Bell an 1859 bell weighing 400 pounds now hangs in the cupola. It’s rung only once a year on Homecoming.

Even the exterior has changed over time. Original wood windows were replaced with metal sash windows. The entrance doors were replaced. Four massive chimneys were removed. Some decorative terra cotta finials were lost to deterioration. Yet despite these changes Denny Hall retains much of its original character. The sandstone and brick facade remains largely intact. The clock in the central dormer a 1959 addition now marks time.

Denny Hall is more than just a building. It’s a living symbol of the university’s history. It’s a place where generations of students have learned and grown. It’s a reminder of Seattle’s rich past and the university’s enduring legacy. It is a silent witness to campus traditions. Its enduring presence continues to shape the lives of those who pass through its doors.
