Have you noticed the simple yet dignified facade before you? This is Denmark Place Baptist Church. It has stood here on Coldharbour Lane since 1825. Its story however begins a little earlier.

Let’s step back to 1802. A small Baptist chapel was founded near the junction of Coldharbour Lane and Denmark Hill. For two decades it served its community. By 1823 the chapel was struggling. The congregation had dwindled almost to nothing. But a new minister arrived. Dr Edward Steane took over. Under his leadership the church experienced a rebirth. The congregation grew rapidly. Soon the small chapel was too small.

A new larger building was needed. And so in 1825 the present Denmark Place Baptist Church was built. Mr Burrell designed it. Mr Humphries constructed it. The cost was 3700 pounds. On June 29 1825 the new church opened its doors. In 1832 side galleries were added to accommodate even more worshippers. Further alterations were made in 1869.

Look closely at the front of Denmark Place Baptist Church. It is a plain stock brick building. Three round arches support a pediment. Each arch has a keystone. The centre keystone is incised with the letters A.D. 1823. This commemorates the renewal of the chapel by Dr Steane. There are four entrances to the church. Each has a segmental or triangular pediment. These are borne on consoles.
