The Denkmal Eimerkette commemorates Bremerhaven’s maritime past. This city relied on bucket chain excavators. These machines kept the harbor navigable.

Before you stands a piece of that history. It is the upper section of a bucket chain. This came from the Bagger I. The Bagger I was built in 1914. It worked tirelessly until 1980. It removed silt from the city’s harbors.

Imagine the scale of the original machine. The Bagger I had 40 buckets on its chain. Each bucket held 400 liters of sludge. That is a lot of mud. It could dredge over 600 cubic meters per hour. It reached depths of up to 14 meters.

The “Oberturas” as it was called, ensured ships could navigate the harbor. Today, a modern excavator continues this work. It is more powerful than its predecessor. The original Bagger I was scrapped. Only this section remains as a reminder.

The current Eimerkette Bagger Bremerhaven was built in 1980. It is 42.4 meters long and has no engine. It could dredge up to 570 cubic meters of mud. It could reach a depth of 18 meters.

The chain rotated around two toothed wheels. These wheels fit into a narrow frame. Buckets scooped up mud. They dumped it into a shaft. The mud then slid into barges. These barges transported the sludge away.

The Bremerhaven harbors needed constant dredging. Up to 750,000 cubic meters of silt had to be moved annually. This ensured the harbor remained operational.

This Denkmal Eimerkette stands near the Geestemünde double lock. It serves as a tribute to hard work. It worked hard on the harbor floor. It is a lasting reminder of Bremerhaven’s maritime heritage.
