“Can you feel the weight of history?” I ask my tour group. We stand before the Denkmal Deutsch-Französischer Krieg. This monument wasn’t just a statue. It was a powerful statement. A testament to a war that shaped Germany.

The Denkmal Deutsch-Französischer Krieg commemorated the victory in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. It stood proudly on Dresden’s Altmarkt. It served as a reminder of the sacrifices made. It celebrated the unification of Germany. The 6.20-meter-tall Germania statue was its centerpiece. Four smaller figures surrounded her. They represented War Science Military Power Peace and Compassion. These were crafted from Carrara marble in Florence.

The transport of these massive marble figures was quite a feat. The Germania alone weighed 6550 kilos. It cost a staggering 3171 Marks just to ship them to Dresden. Imagine the logistical challenge of moving such heavy sculptures. It involved three freight wagons. The total cost for the entire monument reached 186.500 Marks. Funding came from public donations and city reserves.

The model for the Germania was the singer Rosa Heysing. Her image on the monument exuded a jubilant national pride. Germany had been unified into the German Empire. The monument was unveiled on September 1 1880. King Albert of Saxony and his family attended the ceremony.

Despite surviving the Allied bombing raids relatively unscathed the Denkmal Deutsch-Französischer Krieg did not survive the postwar period. In 1946 Dresden’s city administration classified it as a military object. They ordered its dismantling. The Soviet military administration in Dresden had initially advocated for its preservation. This was unfortunately not the case. The Germania was taken down piece by piece. Only fragments remain. The head of Germania found its way to the Dresden City Museum years later.

Today we are left with stories of the Denkmal Deutsch-Französischer Krieg and its fate. It serves as a poignant reminder of the passage of time. It underscores the impact of conflict and the shifting tides of historical memory. It reveals the complexities of celebrating war and commemoration. It remains a symbol that powerfully reflects Dresden’s complex past.
