Recall a time when Denham was the heart of British cinema. Denham is more than just a village. It’s a place where dreams were filmed. It’s a place where silver screen magic was made.

Denham’s story begins in the Old English era. Its name meant “homestead in a valley”. The Domesday Book recorded it as Deneham in 1086. However, Denham’s golden age arrived with the advent of film.

Picture Alexander Korda. He was a visionary. Korda founded London Film Productions and built Denham Film Studios in 1936. The studios became the largest production facility in the UK. These studios boasted seven sound stages. They had workshops for every craft. Luxurious restaurants and dressing rooms were available. Even a Technicolor laboratory was on site.

Stars flocked to Denham. They sought to create cinematic masterpieces. Queen Mary herself visited in 1937. The air crackled with creativity. Films like “Brief Encounter” and “Hamlet” were filmed here. Denham was preferred over Pinewood for its superior facilities.

However, Denham Film Studios faced challenges. Its proximity to Denham Aerodrome caused interruptions. During “Pimpernel Smith’s” filming, aircraft noise disrupted scenes repeatedly.

Denham Film Studios’ glory days were relatively short. By 1952, the final film was made. The facility was then rented to the United States Air Force. In 1981, the buildings were demolished. The site was transformed into Broadwater Park, a business area.

Denham’s history extends beyond the film industry. The Church of Saint Mary has a Norman tower. Village Road has old red brick houses. Southlands Manor dates back to the 16th century. The Old Bakery was built around 1367 for the Abbot of Westminster.

Today, Denham balances its historical charm with modern development. Denham Village retains its original settlement. Denham Green grew around the railway station. Higher Denham stands on a former World War I army camp site.

Many notable people have called Denham home. Raymond Baxter was a BBC presenter. Cilla Black was a singer and entertainer. Sir John Mills was a film actor. Sir Roger Moore also lived in Denham.

Denham is also twinned with Denham, Shark Bay, Western Australia. It connects this English village to the world.

As you stand here in Denham, remember its layers. From its humble beginnings to its cinematic prominence. From its architectural gems to its famous residents. Denham is a place where history and modernity intertwine. It invites you to explore its streets and discover its many stories.
