Denham Methodist Church wasn’t always a church. It began as the home and wheelwright shop of John House. The 1843 Tithe Map reveals the bustling heart of this small community. It shows the cottages, including John House’s, and the well at the intersection of Cheapside Lane and Ashmead Lane. John House, a skilled craftsman, likely descended from a long line of wheelwrights. Denham’s records show a John House, wheelwright, as early as 1749. John House senior, born in 1785, flourished during the rise of Wesleyan Methodism. The movement, with its emphasis on social justice and personal piety, resonated with him. He embodied the typical Methodist of the time, literate, industrious, and committed to his community. Around 1820, John House senior transformed his property into a Wesleyan chapel. A plaque on the building commemorates this act of generosity. The exact date is uncertain, with records suggesting 1819, 1820, or 1828. His will from 1837 confirms his dedication, directing his executors to offer the chapel to the Methodist Church. Denham Methodist Church became a center of worship for the small community. The 1851 Census of Religious Worship paints a picture of a simple chapel, hosting a modest congregation for Sunday evening services and a larger gathering for Sunday school. The House family’s commitment to education extended beyond religious instruction. The British School, located on the corner of Cheapside Lane and Ashmead Lane, provided education for poor children, reflecting the community’s value of learning. Denham Methodist Church continued to serve the community for generations, surviving through the 20th century and witnessing the decline and eventual resurgence of Methodism in the UK. Although no longer a place of worship, Denham Methodist Church stands as a testament to the generosity and values of John House and the early Methodist community of Denham.
