Tucked away in the southeastern corner of Dyrehaven, Den Gule Cottage beckons. This charming yellow cottage isn’t just a pretty face. It holds a fascinating history intertwined with Copenhagen’s vibrant past. Den Gule Cottage started its life as a gatehouse. It marked the entrance to a luxurious spa in 1844. The renowned architect Gottlieb Bindesbøll designed the cottage, as well as the other spa buildings. Imagine the scene. A young physician named Jon Hjaltetin envisioned a haven of wellness. He commissioned Bindesbøll, the greatest Danish architect of the time, to bring his vision to life. The spa featured not only a grand hotel but also an entertainment park. There was a concert hall, bustling stalls, and charming summer villas dotted amongst the landscape. Den Gule Cottage, with its distinctive yellow hue, stood proudly at the entrance, welcoming guests. Atop the cottage’s roof sat a unique clock, crafted by the famous clockmaker Henrik Kühl. This same Kühl would later gain international acclaim for his clocks at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. Picture the lively atmosphere in front of Den Gule Cottage. The clock’s chimes would ring out, reminding guests to catch the last horse-drawn omnibus of the day. As time marched on, transportation improved. By the 1860s, bathers from Copenhagen could easily travel to and from the spa by train or steamboat. The spa era eventually faded. In 1932, the modern Bellevue Strandbad replaced the old spa. The state took ownership of Den Gule Cottage, entrusting its care to the Jægersborg forest district. For many years, the cottage served as a summer kiosk, a refreshing stop for beachgoers and visitors to Dyrehaven. Today, Den Gule Cottage stands as one of only four surviving buildings from the spa’s heyday. It remains a beloved destination for architecture enthusiasts. Students from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts often visit, drawn to its historical significance and Bindesbøll’s distinctive design. Preserved and protected since 1978, Den Gule Cottage now houses a restaurant. It offers diners a charming ambiance and breathtaking views of Bellevue and the Øresund. So, as you admire Den Gule Cottage, remember its journey. From a spa gatehouse to a summer kiosk, and finally to the beloved restaurant it is today. It stands as a testament to the enduring charm of history and architecture, nestled in the heart of Copenhagen.
